Routers, Mesh Systems and Access Points
Wireless routers are very common, and a great solution for WiFi for a small group of users. However, a WiFi router you buy at a retail store is usually not a good solution for a business.
Mesh systems provide a strong signal throughout a large area. These systems use multiple devices placed throughout a building to extend the range of the signal. The problem with these, again often lies in their intended use for a small group of users.
In most cases, businesses should have one or more wireless access points installed to achieve the best results. These devices are hard-wired to the network and are typically about the size of a smoke detector or slightly larger. They are designed to handle larger amounts of traffic than other systems.
Case in Point
Recently, a client of ours came to us with problems with their WiFi service. They had invested in a high-speed fiber internet connection but were getting poor service through their WiFi connection. They had a mesh system designed for home use installed. When they had problems with it, they went out and bought more units to add to their “mesh.” Adding more mesh points only extended the range of their signal coverage while doing nothing to improve the quality of their service.
We conducted and evaluation of their office space using heat-mapping software to estimate WiFi signal coverage. After evaluating the reports, our recommendation was to install two wireless access points that could be manged through their firewall. This business was using six mesh devices in a two-story, 6,600 square foot building.
Our team installed one wireless access point in a centralized location on each floor. Immediately they were able to connect and obtain the full speed provided by their new internet service. The resulting coverage throughout the building is better than it was with their old system. To understand more about how this works, check out this VIDEO.
